Places of interest

The East Midlands is a highly historic area and this is reflected in the large number of museums and historic buildings in the region.  Examples include the Elvaston Castle, a beautiful stately home set in magnificent grounds and the Derby Museum and Art Gallery which boasts paintings and artefacts that are of both local and international significance. The latter includes an exquisite collection of Joseph Wright paintings. Art is mixed with specialist exhibitions such as the “Soldier’s Story” where you can see a range of weaponry and objects, both military and personal. Also on display are historic artefacts from thousands of years ago in the Archaeology Gallery. Other museums in Derby include The Silk Mill which will shortly be renamed as the “Museum of Making”, a museum dedicated to displaying fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history and celebrating the makers of the past. It is located on the site of what is believed to be the world’s first factory and it will be designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational environments for learning programmes and activities.

If you prefer more adventurous activities, a visit to the famous Donnington Park motor racing circuit might allow you to watch a superbike Championship or perhaps take part in one of their “track days”. Or pit your wits against the Logiclock Escape Rooms in Nottingham.  Logiclock is an entertaining puzzle-based live escape game; a new form of entertainment, designed for small groups of 3-5 people. The goal is simple: escape from the room or series of rooms in 60 minutes using only the mind, logic and teamwork, solving all the puzzles and mysteries.

If you prefer the open air, the Great Central Railway is a heritage railway centre formerly known as the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre, which now offers almost 10 miles of heritage railway running through the beautiful scenery of South Nottinghamshire and North-West Leicestershire. Heritage Steam & Diesel services re-create the experience of train travel from when it was more than just a way to travel from one place to another.

Nottingham has a long tradition as a trading hub and manufacturing centre and is known for its fine lace. More recently, it has become a popular cultural destination boasting numerous attractions, including two large theatres and several art galleries. It also hosts many great festivals and events, one of the most popular being the annual Nottingham Goose Fair.

Known as the “Queen of the Midlands” on account of its broad streets and picturesque parks such as the Arboretum, Embankment, and Colwick Park, Nottingham is a great base from which to explore nearby Sherwood Forest, legendary home of Robin Hood. In fact, the image of this most famous of English folk heroes is everywhere around the city, and although his once enormous woodland hangout is now considerably reduced, it lends the city a truly unique atmosphere.

Nottingham Castle affords excellent views of the town and is notable for its bronze statues of Robin Hood and his merry men by Nottingham-born sculptor James Woodford. Destroyed in 1651 by Parliamentary forces, the original castle was replaced by an Italian-style palace belonging to the Duke of Newcastle that is now home to two great museums: the Sherwood Foresters Regimental Museumwith its impressive collection of medals and regimental uniforms, and the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery.

Another unique attraction is the “City of Caves” .  Many caves exist in the sandstone underneath Nottingham, including the spectacular 322-foot-long Mortimer’s Hole directly below the castle.  In all, more than 450 caves lie beneath Nottingham, the largest known grouping of caves in the country, and have been used for centuries for storage and defence. Accessed from the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, fascinating public tours of the caves are available.

If you find yourself in Nottingham in the evening there is a vibrant and varied nightlife to suit all tastes.  With cocktail bars, proper traditional pubs, indie cinemas, chic nightclubs and live music venues galore, Nottingham is vastly diverse when it comes to nightlife.  The city boasts some great theatre venues. The Nottingham Playhouse, Nottingham Arts Theatre, Lace Market Theatre and the Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall all offer a variety of performances throughout the seasons. If the cinema is more your thing,  The Cornerhouse, located in the heart of the city centre, is one of Nottingham’s best-loved entertainment venues.
